In holiday time, with all the travelling, and especially in the heat, many women struggle with bladder infections and all people can suffer constipation when ‘in transit’.
Prolonged periods of sitting still, road food, sugary drinks and long waits for bathroom stops are not a recipe for healthy elimination.
It really all boils down to the choices we make – my husband refuses packed food on a road trip, and enjoys the fun of eating at the garage shops and doesn’t mind the resulting bloating-farting-tender tummy that results. I prefer to pack my little containers with healthier snacks and fresh fruit – I am not hungry at the stops and less likely to be tempted, and when I do succumb, it’s never enough to push my otherwise-happy-digestion over the edge. I have also learned to take and buy water instead of juice and coldrink and not having the blood sugar spikes all day long means I am not totally buggered at the end of a long trip.
Tibb Gastrone are very handy to take with on a trip – they help to release tummy spasms and absorb winds, and while they are not a get-out-of-jail-free card, they do help to make the transition from regular food to holiday food a little bit easier. It’s worth noting that part of the problem is in the gut microbiome, because we grow gut bacteria according to the food we eat, so when we go away from home and eat ‘other’ food, we digest it less well. A probiotic taken at least twice a day does a long way to making any holiday and easier transition.
