While working in a shop has it’s own set of challenges, a health shop is perhaps unique – no other environment requires you to be open about things no-one ever wants to talk about. But here we chat about insomnia, constipation and lack of sex-drive as if they were everyday topics. Which of course they should be, because lots of people suffer alone and in silence…

Talking it out over the counter may feel uncomfortable for you, especially if you don’t talk about it to anyone ever and you don’t have the words. It’s fine to say fart at home, but it’s a whole different thing to try and explain the fetid winds from your bowels to a relative stranger in a shop. It’s funny how many adults can’t or won’t say poo. I wonder if this comes from childhood, where private parts had cutsie names and number 2 was whispered in mom’s ear in public places? Does this turn us into girls who are embarrassed to tinkle in public toilets that aren’t soundproofed? I have had customers who have made themselves constipated on purpose before they travel so they don’t have ‘to go’ in transit.

Our bodies and the way they work or don’t work is the most natural thing in the whole world, and the whole reason you came into the shop in the 1st place right? It should be easy to talk about because, despite our differences, we all work the same way, we all put our pants on 1 leg at a time…
