Hydrosols, also known as floral waters, are products from steam distilling plant materials. Hydrosols are like essential oils but in far less of a concentration. When a distiller brews plant material with water in a large cooker the steam fills the pot and, as it rises, it causes the glands of the plants to burst and release the oils and essence of the plant into the steam. The oil rises through a condenser and collects in a separate vessel. This is what we know as essential oil, but what about all that fragrant water that was steamed with the original plant material? That is our hydrosol, or floral water.
Hydrosols contain all of the essence of the plant in every drop, just like essential oils, but in a milder form, making them suitable for all manner of applications where essential oils would be too strong. Many plants which produce essential oils also produce hydrosols – but plants which don’t produce essential oils may produce hydrosols too.
Hydrosols are not just misters – water to which essential oils have been added. Hydrosols are a unique product, a true part of distillation and cannot be manufactured synthetically. They are used 100% pure as they come out of the still with a strong taste, strong scent and a perfect acid balance of 5.5 – to match human skin.
Hydrosols are very economically priced and are suited to smaller budgets than many essential oils. You don’t have to dilute a hydrosol before use – because it is already “diluted” in the waters of its making. However, you can still add hydrosols to many skin care products.
Hydrosols are generally more gentle in their actions. This makes many hydrosols suitable for use in pregnancy (except in the first trimester and in contra-indicated pregnancies), and with babies and children. Many hydrosols are great for skincare too – gentle on both baby’s and mom’s skin.
